Five years ago, the first production hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) was made available in the form of the Toyota Mirai. This December the automaker will be revealing the second-generation Mirai, which has undergone a drastic redesign to give it an edgier, racier look. Accompanying the redesign is everything you have come to expect from Toyota: Innovation, comfort, and convenience. If you are curious to know more, please keep reading! Our Westbury Toyota team has drafted up a quick, informative preview of all you can expect from the 2021 Toyota Mirai.
The changes to the new Mirai are not just limited to appearance – in fact, the entire layout of this car has been changed. It is now based on Toyota’s rear-wheel drive platform, which means that the 2021 version is rocking a far more progressive shape that is clearly coupe inspired. These changes also bring about a lower, wider, longer, and unyielding body that presents a brash stance. Overall, the new appearance of the Mirai manages to be far more streamlined while evoking a sense of adventure and excitement.
To accentuate the Mirai’s sculpted new form are available 20-inch alloy wheels, as well as the new Hydro Blue exterior paint color. Hydro Blue has never been used before in the Toyota lineup, and the deep, bright richness of this color is achieved through a special multiple layer painting procedure. Hydro Blue will only be available on the Mirai’s Limited trim. Other striking colors you can expect to see for the Mirai include Supersonic Red, Oxygen White, Black, and the Mirai exclusive Heavy Metal.
In terms of standard tech, the Mirai has definitely raised the bar. Every single trim level has a standard 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen, accompanied with a 14 JBL speaker setup (complete with amp and subwoofers). You can also expect to see Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto compatibility. There is an 8-inch color LCD digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel that houses the speedometer but will also give you readouts regarding fuel efficiency and drive mode. An additional standard feature on all trim levels is a Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging tray.
The XLE Mirai trim offers up dual-zone climate control along with heated white or black perforated faux leather seats with striking accent stitching. Limited trim features add a panoramic moonroof and a power slide sunshade, as well as a rear window sunshade. Passengers sitting in the back can control the temperature and audio through a rear touchscreen control panel.
The Mirai is one of only three Toyota models that will have the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite, which has enhanced some of its previous features, including:
The Mirai also has Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) which can, in certain conditions, detect pedestrians and cyclists. Safety should always be a main concern of automakers, and Toyota has gone above and beyond with the new safety suite features in the 2021 Mirai.
Five years ago, the Mirai turned heads as the first production FCEV and in December, this car will command attention here on Long Island yet again with its bold redesign. The tech and safety improvements made to the Mirai will turn driving into a heightened experience, giving you every convenience possible while ensuring that no matter where you are driving, you and your passengers are highly protected.
