Toyota Supra and Tacoma Win Big at the 2021 SEMA Awards

Posted at Fri, Nov 12, 2021 9:00 AM

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) awards were created to recognize and honor the most customizable vehicles in the industry. Suffice to say that to win is a huge distinction, and for the 2021 awards Toyota claimed top honors with two of its vehicles: The GR Supra and the Tacoma. This is the first time Toyota models have claimed this award, which makes it a big deal! To shed a little more light on the SEMA awards and just how Toyota met their criteria, our Westbury Toyota staff have put together a helpful overview.

The SEMA Awards

The automotive industry was built upon many decades of hard work and impressive innovation, and it was an admiration for these factors, as well as a love for all vehicles in general, that led to the creation of SEMA. SEMA spans across several greatly diverse groups: Retailers, distributors, retailers, race teams, auto restorers, and car clubs, just to name a few. Members of SEMA run the gamut from creating, selling, and using all manner of specialty automotive accessories and parts in order to customize vehicles both for performance and for aesthetics. At its heart, SEMA consists of people who have a deep love for automobiles and all the related hobbies.

The SEMA awards exist to recognize distinguished contributions made to the automotive specialty equipment industry over the period of one year. In order to even be considered for the awards, an inductee has to have shown attributes that have helped to advance the industry. These attributes include ethics, service, professionalism, and service.

Of Toyota’s big win for both the 2021 GR Supra and Tacoma, Christ Kersting, president and CEO of SEMA, had this to say: “We congratulate Toyota on having two vehicles selected by SEMA Show exhibitors to win the Sport Compact of the Year with the Toyota Supra, and Mid-sized Truck of the Year with the Toyota Tacoma. These two awards are a result of Toyota’s dedication to the specialty market, and proof that the collaboration between Toyota and the aftermarket has resulted in greater options for consumers.”

In response, Group Vice President of Toyota Division Marketing, Liza Materazzo, said this: “The SEMA Awards honor the most customizable vehicles in the industry. With only five categories this year, we are thrilled to take home not one but two awards. Both Tacoma and GR Supra have loyal fan bases who like to push the limits with unique customizations, making SEMA the perfect laboratory to explore what is possible.”

Toyota’s Aftermarket Potential on Display

From November 2nd to the 5th, there will be a collection of Toyota’s performance vehicles (both off-road and on) in its exhibit at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Some of what’s on display there are perfect examples of just why two of Toyota’s models received SEMA awards this year. The Tacoma has proven quite exemplary in regards to aftermarket specialty equipment, as evidenced by the Tacozilla, which is based on the Tacoma TRD sport and features a custom camper. Likewise, the Tacoma Overlanding Concept Vehicle is a tribute to those who want to live the weekend warrior lifestyle and provides drivers with off-roading capability in addition to reliable functionality.

Well Deserved Accolades

Toyota has once again proven their devotion to the specialty market, and Toyota’s fanbase has eagerly risen to the call to create some truly unique customizations. Winning these SEMA awards is a definite honor for Toyota as it not only showcases the aftermarket compatibility of the 2021 GR Supra and Tacoma, but also emphasizes that Toyota has gone above and beyond other automakers in this regard. 2021 has clearly been a significant year, and we can only wait expectantly to see what 2022 has in store.
