2022 Toyota 4Runner Vs. 2022 Honda Passport: Which One Is Right for Me?

Posted at Fri, Sep 2, 2022 9:00 AM

In order to stay relevant in today’s midsize SUV market, a vehicle needs to have a lot more than just the bare minimum. Safety, convenience, innovation, utility – all of these are areas where an SUV needs to shine. For the 2022 year, there are two midsize SUVs that provide drivers with all of that and more, making it a tough call on which one is right for you. Toyota’s 4Runner has long been one of the SUV greats, but Honda is attempting to raise their game this year with the 2022 Passport. To help you figure out which of these outstanding vehicles will best suit your needs, and prove that the Toyota 4Runner is still the name to beat in its category, our Westbury Toyota staff has put together a short but comprehensive comparison guide.

Performance and Power

To get a better idea of just how close these SUVs are matched in terms of performance and power, check the table below:

2022 Toyota 4Runner

2022 Honda Passport

4.0-Liter DOHC 24-Valve V-6 engine

3.5-liter SOHC 24-Valve V-6 engine

5-speed ECT-i transmission (with sequential shift mode)

9-speed automatic transmission

270 horsepower (hp) and 278 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque

280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque

17 miles per gallon (mpg) combined

21 mpg combined

Outside of all of this, the 4Runner does have another major notable difference: Off-roading capability in the form of the TRD Pro trim level. Along with TRD-tuned front springs, the TRD Pro’s suspension features large TRD-tuned FOX high performance shocks that have rear remote reservoirs. These allow the 4Runner TRD Pro to traverse almost any kind of unforgiving terrain with ease. The ¼ inch aluminum skid plate will keep the important things protected no matter where you go. The TRD Pro also has unique 17-inch alloy all-terrain wheels that are wrapped in Nitto® Terra Grappler®, which are engineered to deliver increased traction when off-roading as well as enhanced comfort when on the road.

There’s more to the 2022 4Runner TRD Pro than just its impressive off-roading capabilities, however. The already rugged looking 4Runner exterior gets some extra flair in the form of TRD Pro badging and its signature power rear window. The interior is also decked out with all-weather floor mats, a sliding cargo rear deck that can hold up to 440 lbs., seats with standout red-stitching, and a leather-wrapped TRD shift knob.

Safety and Tech Features

The 2022 4Runner offers a great deal in terms of safety and tech, and while the 2022 Honda Passport has a lot of the same, it also lacks in some key areas. Standard in the 4Runner are eight airbags, a backup camera, side-impact door beams, as well as both Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) and the Star Safety System.

The TSS-P suite grants drivers access to a number of different safety features, including:

  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert
  • Pre-Collision Prevention with Pedestrian Detection

Meanwhile, the Star Safety System provides you with Vehicle Stability Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Smart Stop Technology, Traction Control, Brake Assist, and Anti-lock Brake System.

All Around Practicality and Convenience

When it comes to practicality, the Toyota 4Runner quite simply has more to offer both drivers and passengers than the Honda Passport. With the 4Runner you will get an 8-inch touchscreen display that is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. You will also get Remote Connect, Wi-Fi Connect, and a 1-year trial of Safety Connect. The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is designed with utility and convenience in mind, meaning that no matter where you are it will be easy to stay connected and comfortable.

Which One Is Right for Me?

Which of these two outstanding midsize SUVs is right for you? Given how close they are in so many areas, it is really a tough call. However, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner has several things the 2022 Honda Passport simply does not, including off roading capabilities, extensive safety features, and an abundance of convenient features.
