2022 Toyota Camry Vs. 2022 Subaru Legacy: Which One Is Right for Me?

Posted at Fri, Aug 5, 2022 9:00 AM

Anyone shopping around for a new midsize sedan will find that the options are many. When you narrow down the search parameters to the things that really matter, such as reliability, fuel efficiency, convenience, and safety, you will find that there are two cars in this class that stand out above all the others: The 2022 Toyota Camry and the 2022 Subaru Legacy. Both of these cars have plenty to offer drivers, but which one of them will be the right choice for you? To help you with this decision, our Westbury Toyota staff have written up a short but thorough comparison that highlights which of these midsize sedans has the most to offer.

All Around Efficiency

The 2022 Camry has quite a lot going on under the hood, including a standard 2.5 liter (L) 4-cylinder engine that provides 203 horsepower (hp). Four of the Subaru’s trim levels (Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited) also have a 2.5 L engine; however, this one only puts out 182 hp. Upgrading to the Legacy’s Limited XT and Touring XT’s 2.4 L turbocharged DOHC engine will get you up to 260 hp, but a few Camry trims (TRD, XSE V6, XLE V6) outmatch that via a 3.5 L DOHC engine that delivers an impressive 301 hp.

While performance is important, fuel efficiency is more so, especially with the current fuel prices. The 2022 Camry LE carries an EPA estimated 28 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined, while the LE Hybrid comes in at 51 mpg/53 mpg/52 mpg. In contrast, the 2022 Subaru Legacy will only net you 27 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. What is more, there is no hybrid option for the Legacy.

The Camry has additional features that make it efficient in other areas, such as the Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive (AWD). While the Subaru Legacy also has standard AWD, it is symmetrical AWD and is not as effective.

Interiors Full of Comfort and Convenience

The Camry is convenience personified, with multiple features meant to make driving and owning a car about as easy as it can be. Standard on the Camry LE is the Smart Key System, which controls the car’s front doors and trunk, as well as Push Button Start. While these options are available on the Subaru Legacy, they are not standard and must be added via the Optional Package.

Drivers and passengers will benefit from the Camry’s many different comfort-centric features, such as the standard dual zone automatic climate control and the 8-way power driver seat with lumbar control. The Camry comes standard with six quality speakers in the interior for superior sound quality, whereas the Legacy only has four with six being standard on the Legacy Premium trim.

Exterior Styling and Accents

Both of these cars have a striking exterior appearance that makes them stand out from others in the midsize sedan class. However, the Camry has far more exterior styling options, beginning with the 19-inch alloy wheel options that are standard on the Camry TRD and XSE. These trims come with a standard blackout look on the wheels from the gloss-black and matte-black finishes. The Subaru Legacy’s biggest wheels are 18-inch, which are standard on the Legacy Sport trim and above, with the blackout option only being available on the Sport.

You can brighten up your drive in the Camry LE through its available moonroof with power tilt/slide, or you can go for the XLE or XSE, which has an available panoramic glass roof with front power tilt/slide moonroof. There is no power tilt/slide moonroof option for the base model of the Subaru Legacy, and there is no panoramic option available on any of the trims.

Which One Is Right for Me?

As you can see, the 2022 Toyota Camry exceeds the 2022 Subaru Legacy in performance, fuel efficiency, comfort, and styling. The fact that the Camry has a hybrid option while the Legacy does not is also an important factor to consider. While there is no denying the Legacy is a solid option for a midsize sedan, the Camry is the superior choice.
