Here's Everything New with the 2022 Toyota Highlander

Posted at Fri, Oct 22, 2021 9:00 AM

For four generations, the Toyota Highlander has stood firm as one of the most versatile mid-size SUVs in North America. Easily recognizable due to its distinct, commanding design, the Highlander is due for some interesting changes in 2022, including a new Bronze Edition. The newest version of this family-favorite SUV will have plenty of old, familiar features mixed in with a bevy of new innovations, ensuring that it heads into 2022 with everything drivers and passengers could possibly need.

The New Bronze Edition

The Bronze Edition for the new Highlander is only available for the Hybrid powertrain and offers a considerable amount of standard features unique to the trim, including:

  • Wipers that are rain-sensing
  • Puddle lamps with the Highlander logo
  • 10-way power driver seat with memory
  • Power liftgate (handsfree)
  • Ambient lighting set in-dash
  • A digital rearview mirror
  • Power outlets that are 1500 W

Another exciting addition is the choice between a front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) system for the Highlander Hybrid grades. While the FWD system provides more than enough get up and go for your everyday commute, people who are looking for a bit more in terms of handling and grip will much prefer the AWD system, as it uses a rear-mounted electric motor to provide extra power to the rear wheels whenever needed. This AWD system functions seamlessly, allowing drivers to navigate any kind of road with easy assurance.

In terms of appearance, there is a lot to look forward to with the Bronze Edition, including the Cement exterior paint color that is exclusive to this edition. Other paint colors include Midnight Black Metallic and Wind Chill Pearl, and all of these colors look striking when accompanied by the bronze accents you will find both inside and out. The interior has bronze stitching, SofTex-trimmed seats with a unique bronze logo, bronze door sills, and Hybrid Bronze Edition floor and cargo mats with the same logo. On the exterior, the 18-inch bronze wheels are going to grab attention as they complement the rest of the outside perfectly.

The Highlander XSE

Only a year old, the Highlander XSE trim is coming into 2022 with a surplus of must-have features. The XSE was designed for those who prefer a sportier ride and to that end, you will find that it has a suspension that has been specially tuned, exclusive trim on the interior, and special styling on the exterior.

In order to deliver a more exciting driving and handling experience, the 2022 XSE has a 295 horsepower (hp) 3.5-liter (L) V6 engine paired with an automatic eight-speed transmission. You will have the option of getting it with FWD or with a Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD, and no matter what system you choose, it teams up well with the Multi-Terrain Select Feature that will adjust the responses of the drivetrain to weather and road conditions. To further enhance its driving capabilities on every terrain, the XSE comes equipped with re-tuned shock absorbers, a higher-rate rear stabilizer bar, and higher-rate springs. The electric power steering has also undergone some re-tuning in order to give off a sportier steering sense. All of these adjustments have been made without sacrificing any of the Highlander’s smooth ride experience.

Updated and Improved Safety Features

As always, safety is paramount for Toyota and as such, the 2022 Highlander possesses some updated and improved safety tech, such as the following:

  • Toyota Safety Sense 2.5
  • Lane Keeping Technology
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

You will also benefit from features such as Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert on LE grades and higher, while Limited and above will have Rear Cross Traffic Braking with clearance sonar. The Limited trim will also have a backup camera that has helpful dynamic gridlines, as well as a Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan.

A Bolder, More Creative Version for 2022

As you can see, there is plenty to be excited about for the 2022 Highlander. In addition to the new Bronze Addition for the Hybrid powertrain, there are plenty of additions in the XSE to look forward to as well. As always, Toyota has found a way to deliver high functionality, a seamless sense of style, and the utmost in safety tech in one incomparable driving package.
