Vehicle recalls are a big deal and unfortunately something that happens from time to time. There is no reason to panic, however, because recalls happen for a reason – to ensure that your vehicle can get the attention it needs to be safe and roadworthy. Recalls can happen with any kind of vehicle at any time, and keeping up with them is as much a part of your maintenance routine as everything else. With the best interests of every Long Island Toyota driver in mind, we here at Westbury Toyota have written up an informative piece on why recalls are important to follow up on, how to check if your Toyota has one, and how to go about dealing with it.
A recall is issued when either the manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) decides that a particular vehicle (or parts of that vehicle) pose an unacceptable safety risk or does not meet the current minimum in safety standards. When this happens, the manufacturer is required to fix the issue by doing any of the following, as circumstances dictate:
In the event that a recall has been issued for your vehicle, it means that it has a safety defect that directly affects you. For this reason, you should never ignore a recall and instead be certain to have it addressed as quickly as possible.
If you have registered your vehicle, you will be notified by Toyota with all the details of the recall. This further cements why it is imperative to make sure that your registration and mailing address are always up to date. You can also take it one step further by registering for recall information via email with the NHTSA.
If you are a Long Island area Toyota owner, you can also check to see if your Toyota has any open recalls by utilizing Westbury Toyota’s own handy recall department website, which allows you to input your vehicle identification number (VIN) in order to see if there are any open recalls. The VIN is either found on the very front of the dashboard on the driver’s side or on the driver’s side door pillar. If, after entering the VIN on the recall department site, a recall is shown, the next step is to place a call to the Recall Support Line. By doing so, you'll have the chance to book your Toyota in with Westbury Toyota in order to remedy the recall.
