If there is one thing that has been proven about Toyota over the years, it is that the automaker’s focus on a greener, better future continuously improves the present, as well. A prime example of this is the Toyota Mirai; the fuel cell electric vehicle whose name translates to “future” in Japanese. The Mirai is widely regarded as the pinnacle of automotive technology, so much so in fact that it was recently the recipient of the 2021 Car Technology of the Year award from the Hispanic Motor Press. This is not the first accolade the Mirai has received and likely will not be the last, and we here at Westbury Toyota are excited to share all the details regarding this award and what it represents.
The Hispanic Motor Press Awards (HMPA) serve to recognize and award not only the best in class for all different vehicles, but also to identify the most remarkable vehicles available in the market and how they meet the needs and wants of Hispanic drivers. The advisory board of the HMPA annually selects an independent group of jurors made up from prominent Hispanic journalists, industry influencers, and bloggers in the automotive field.
Of the recent award for the Toyota Miria, the president of the HMPA, Ricardo Rodriguez-Long, had this to say: “Toyota has demonstrated their commitment towards a sustainable and eco-friendly world. The new Toyota Mirai demonstrates that we have the technology today, right at the dealerships, to achieve the goal of eliminating hydrocarbon fuel emissions in energy generation. Under its skin we find many advanced components and the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ system makes it also one of the safest vehicles on the road today…this is high tech on wheels!”
The 2021 Mirai derives its power from the latest advancement in Toyota’s fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) powertrain. This year’s model features a more potent fuel cell system which offers a more enjoyable driving experience. The Mirai has rear-wheel drive (RWD) as well as a rear and front multi-link suspension which provides drivers with a driving experience very similar to that of a luxury sedan. The new hydrogen powered system gives drivers a EPA-estimated driving range of 402 miles, which is a 30 percent increase over that mile range of the first generation Mirai.
There is far more to appreciate about the Mirai than just its mileage and power. True to Toyota form, the car also features highly advanced safety and user technology. The Toyota Safety Suite 2.5+ includes the following:
Drivers will also benefit from the Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan, Curb View, and Overhead 360-Degree View in drive and reverse, all of which display on the Mirai’s 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia display.
The Mirai’s interior tech is just as impressive as the rest of the car, featuring an 8-inch color TFT LCD digital gauge cluster in addition to the 12.3 touchscreen display. The touchscreen display also gives users access to SiriusXM, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless Bluetooth connectivity.
As you can see, the Mirai is well-deserving of its HMPA Car Technology of the Year Award. This achievement is another notch in Toyota’s belt and is recognition of the automaker’s commitment to creating a future that is both eco-friendly and sustainable.
